Patna, June 17: A severe heatwave affecting most districts of Bihar, including Patna, has made life difficult for residents. For the past 15 days, the scorching sun has shown no signs of relenting, with daily maximum temperatures consistently above 40 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat has made it challenging for people to venture outdoors.

In response to the severe heat, school holidays have been extended by two days in Patna and Gaya districts. Orders for the extension have been issued by the district magistrates (DMs) of both districts, mandating the closure of all schools up to class VIII on June 18 and June 19.

Patna DM Shirshat Kapil Ashok stated in the order that, according to the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, the severe heat and heatwave conditions in Patna district are likely to adversely affect the health of students. Consequently, from June 18 to June 19, 2024, educational activities are suspended in all government and private schools in Patna up to class 8. However, teachers and non-teaching staff are required to be present in the school/office to perform their duties.

Similarly, Gaya District Magistrate Dr. Tyagarajan SM has ordered the closure of classes from 1 to 8 in all government and private schools in the district from June 18 to June 19 due to the intense heat. Additionally, all coaching institutes and Anganwadi centers in the district will remain closed during this period. The Gaya DM has urged residents to adhere to the advisory issued by the Disaster Department concerning the severe heat.

These measures aim to safeguard the health and well-being of students and the general public during the ongoing heatwave.
