Completion of Patna Airport New Terminal Delayed Again

By Neeraj Kumar

Patna: The construction of the new terminal at Patna Airport, originally scheduled for completion by 31 October and later extended to 31 December, has been delayed yet again. Although the civil structure is complete, 40% of the finishing work remains unfinished, making it unlikely to meet the revised deadline.

The Chairman of the Airports Authority of India is expected to visit on 6 December to assess the progress and set a third timeline for the terminal’s completion.

Pending Work Highlights

The finishing work includes several incomplete tasks such as wiring, painting, wall putty, and the installation of a false ceiling. While the false ceiling in the arrival area is complete, work in the departure area remains pending. Following this, painting and the installation of wooden frames will take place.

Additionally, key installations are yet to be completed:

  • Passenger Amenities: Chairs for passengers, ticket counters, and baggage-checking facilities.
  • Conveyor Belts: Installation of three conveyor belts for luggage handling.
  • Aerobridges and Parking Bays: Five aerobridges and ten parking bays are planned but will only be built after the new terminal becomes operational. This is because the existing terminal must first be demolished, as these facilities will be constructed in its place.

Revised Timeline

Sources indicate that efforts are now being directed towards completing the new terminal by 31 March 2024, aligning with the end of the current financial year. This timeline also allows for the possibility of inaugurating the terminal before the announcement of next year’s Bihar Assembly elections.

A Significant Upgrade

Once completed, the new terminal will be seven times larger than the existing one, providing a significant boost to the airport’s capacity and passenger handling capabilities.
