Patna: Once confined to village courtyards and school grounds, kho-kho has now carved out a distinct identity in Bihar. For women athletes in particular, the sport is no longer merely a pastime but is steadily emerging as a viable career path and a source of recognition. In a significant step forward, the Kho-Kho Association of Bihar is set to launch the third edition of the Women’s Kho-Kho League this May, providing a fresh platform for aspiring players.
The league is not just a series of matches but a stage for hundreds of young girls from small towns and villages who are eager to showcase their talent and progress on merit.
Talent Hunt Through Transparent Trials
To ensure greater transparency and competitiveness, teams will once again be formed through selection trials. The initiative aims to provide opportunities to players who may have previously been overlooked due to a lack of exposure. According to association secretary Neeraj Kumar Pappu, the selection process will be entirely fair, with players chosen strictly on performance. Dates and venues for the trials, along with the selection committee, will be announced shortly.
Rising Participation from Rural Areas
The success of the previous two editions has highlighted the growing popularity of women’s kho-kho in the state. Several players have emerged despite limited resources, impressing with their skill and determination. This year, organisers aim to ensure wider district-level participation, enabling talent from across Bihar to come to the fore. The league is increasingly becoming a major opportunity for athletes from rural and smaller urban centres.
Rewards and Recognition
To make the third edition more appealing, special arrangements have been made for players. Winning teams will receive glittering trophies along with attractive prizes, boosting morale and motivation. Notably, top performers in the league will be given priority in the selection process for national-level competitions, making the event a crucial stepping stone for future careers.
Towards a Professional Setup
Organisers are also focusing on improving infrastructure, facilities and match management to create a more professional environment. The aim is to prepare players for higher levels of competition by exposing them to well-organised events.
A New Direction for Women’s Sports
The association believes that such initiatives are instrumental in giving a new direction to women’s sports. As girls continue to excel across fields, their confidence and performance on the sporting stage are also witnessing a steady rise.
A New Beginning
The full schedule, trial dates and team announcements will be released soon. However, it is certain that the upcoming edition will bring several new faces into the spotlight and play a key role in taking women’s kho-kho in Bihar to greater heights.
