Patna: In response to the intensifying cold wave in Bihar, Patna District Magistrate (DM) Dr Chandra Shekhar Singh has issued a directive revising school timings across the district. Effective from 2 January to 6 January 2025, all government and private schools, including pre-schools and Anganwadi centres, are instructed to operate only between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
The order aims to safeguard children’s health amidst dropping temperatures. The Patna DM has also directed Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and District Education Officers to ensure strict compliance with the revised schedule.
The cold wave, driven by westerly winds, has caused a significant drop in temperatures across Bihar. Patna’s minimum temperature has plummeted to 11.2°C, with a day-night temperature difference of just 4–5°C in many areas. The Meteorological Department predicts some improvement in weather conditions after 4 January. However, considering the potential health risks for children, the school timings have been adjusted.
Under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, educational activities for all classes are prohibited before 9:00 am and after 4:00 pm. Exceptions will be made for special classes and pre-board or board examinations. School administrations are directed to reschedule their activities accordingly.
This order, issued on 1 January 2025, underscores the administration’s commitment to prioritising student welfare during the cold wave.
