Patna: A low-pressure system over central India is set to bring several days of heavy rain to Gujarat and Maharashtra between September 12 and 15, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The system was located over southwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Vidarbha at 8:30 am on September 13. It is expected to move west-northwestwards across southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat during the next 24 hours.
Gujarat is forecast to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through September 15. Isolated very heavy rainfall is possible on September 13 and 14, particularly over parts of the Gujarat region, south Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch.
The IMD has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Gujarat on September 13. Very heavy rain is forecast for September 14, while Saurashtra and Kutch may receive very heavy showers on September 13 and 14.
Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in several areas of the state. The rainfall comes as parts of Gujarat, particularly Saurashtra and Kutch, have experienced a rain deficit.
Maharashtra and Mumbai
Neighbouring Maharashtra is also expected to see an increase in rainfall. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy showers, with more widespread rain over Konkan and Goa and parts of Maharashtra during the same period.
For September 13, widespread rainfall is forecast over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. Isolated heavy rain is likely over Marathwada, while very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan and Goa. North Madhya Maharashtra may receive extremely heavy rain on the same day.
Mumbai and neighbouring areas are likely to experience heavy showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad.
The weather department has warned that heavy downpours could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and difficult travel conditions in low-lying areas.
Wider Impact
The weather system is also expected to trigger rainfall across other parts of India. West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are likely to receive widespread rainfall over the next few days.
Heavy rain is also forecast over parts of East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab. Several eastern and northeastern states may witness widespread showers.
The IMD has issued a fishermen warning for the north Maharashtra coast on September 13 and the Gujarat coast and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea until September 16.
The monsoon season is moving towards its final phase. The coming spell could bring useful rainfall to parts of the two states while also producing sharp bursts of heavy rain in some locations.
