Bus Stand

Patna: A new era in public transport is set to begin in Bihar, with the state government announcing a major initiative to construct state-of-the-art electric bus depots in six key cities. The decision, aimed at promoting environmental protection and enhancing passenger convenience, marks a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility.
According to Transport Minister Shravan Kumar, the depots will be developed under the Prime Minister e-Bus Sewa Yojana at a total cost of ₹62.83 crore. The facilities will be set up in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur and Purnia. The move is expected not only to reduce pollution levels in urban centres but also to provide commuters with a world-class travel experience.
The proposed depots will be more than mere parking spaces. They are being designed as modern transport hubs, with the Building Construction Department tasked with their development. Each facility will include an administrative block, high-tech workshops and advanced ramps for bus washing and maintenance.
A key feature of the depots will be large charging stations capable of powering multiple electric buses simultaneously, along with reliable power back-up systems to ensure uninterrupted operations. Passenger and staff amenities will include public toilets, a two-metre-high security boundary wall and dedicated feeding rooms for mothers, reflecting a thoughtful approach to inclusivity and safety.
Government buses have often suffered from poor maintenance, leading to frequent breakdowns. However, the introduction of these modern depots is expected to address the issue. The Transport Minister emphasised that special attention will be given to the safe operation and regular upkeep of buses.
In addition, comfortable rest houses will be constructed for drivers and conductors working long shifts, a measure seen as a positive step towards driver welfare and improved efficiency.
The overarching objective of the scheme is to steer Bihar towards a carbon-neutral transport system. Large-scale deployment of electric buses will significantly reduce diesel consumption and contribute to cleaner air in cities. In congested urban centres such as Gaya and Muzaffarpur, the introduction of e-buses is also expected to curb noise pollution while offering passengers better travel at affordable fares.
With this comprehensive masterplan, the Transport Department aims to strengthen connectivity across the state, providing fresh momentum to local economic growth.
