Severe Cold in Bihar: Patna Schools Ordered Closed for Classes 1 to 8 Till 23 January

By Neeraj Kumar

Patna: In light of the severe cold wave, all government and private schools, Anganwadi centres, and play schools in Patna district have been ordered to remain closed for classes 1 to 8 until 23 January. For classes above 8, school timings have been adjusted to operate from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. However, educational activities related to board examinations have been exempted from these restrictions.

Patna District Magistrate Dr Chandrashekhar Singh invoked Section 163 to enforce the closure of schools up to class 8 in all government and private institutions, as well as Anganwadi centres. An amendment to memorandum number 772 issued earlier by the Collectorate has been circulated, and copies of the order have been sent to the Education Department and all police station sub-divisional officers.

The order specifies that classes above class 8 will continue from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, and activities concerning board exams will remain unaffected. This directive will be in effect until 23 January.

Earlier, schools were allowed to reopen on 20 January after an earlier cold spell. However, the weather conditions worsened again within two days, prompting the District Magistrate to reimpose the ban on classes up to class 8.

Bihar continues to grapple with a severe cold wave. The mercury has been steadily dropping, and dense fog persists across the region, further exacerbating the cold. Although the sun briefly appeared in Patna for two days, the cold returned with dense fog enveloping the city. Daytime temperatures in Patna have dropped to approximately 16 degrees Celsius.

The extended school closures and adjusted timings are part of the administration’s efforts to safeguard students and staff from the ongoing harsh weather conditions.
