Patna: In a major development on Sunday morning in Patna, police were involved in an encounter with a notorious criminal in the Pirbahore police station limits near the Marine Drive and PMCH areas of the state capital. The accused, Amit Kumar alias Nitish, sustained a bullet injury in his leg during retaliatory firing by the police and was subsequently arrested. He has been admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital. A pistol and live cartridges were also recovered from the spot.
Police sources said they had received specific intelligence about a planned major criminal incident in the Marine Drive–PMCH area. Acting on the tip-off, a joint team of the Patna Police, DIU and STF launched a special surveillance and cordon operation early in the morning. When the suspect was intercepted after noticing suspicious movement, he attempted to flee. According to police, the accused tried to pull out a weapon, prompting retaliatory firing in which he was shot in the leg.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Amit Kumar alias Nitish is an active member of the notorious Subodh Singh gang. Subodh Singh is currently lodged in Purulia jail in West Bengal but is allegedly continuing to operate his criminal network from behind bars. A native of Vaishali district, Amit has multiple criminal cases registered against him and is known as a sharpshooter.
On January 27, 2025, a conspiracy was allegedly hatched to murder Roshan alias Tatiya, a member of the Subodh Singh gang, during his production at the Patna Civil Court. Amit and his associate Piyush had reportedly reached the court premises to execute the plan. While Piyush was arrested in time, Amit managed to escape and had been absconding since then. Police are now questioning Amit to ascertain which gang had hired him and who was behind the entire conspiracy.
According to investigators, the attack was planned in the Marine Drive area while Roshan Tatiya was being brought to PMCH on the pretext of a court appearance. Timely intelligence inputs helped the police foil the plot, thereby averting a major crime in the capital.
Senior officers, including the Town DSP, DIU and STF officials, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the encounter. The injured accused remains under tight police security at PMCH. City Superintendent of Police (Central), Patna, Mamta Kalyani, said that interrogation is underway and the entire criminal network will be exposed soon.
She added that Amit had earlier entered the Patna Civil Court (Pirbahore) premises with the intention of carrying out a crime using illegal weapons. In that case, one of his associates had already been arrested with arms, while Amit was a wanted accused. The arrested criminal has a serious criminal history involving grave offences.
Meanwhile, the police’s ongoing crackdown under ‘Operation Langda’ continues, with intensified raids to identify and arrest other members linked to the Subodh Singh gang. Officials said the successful operation has sent a strong message that any violation of law will be dealt with strictly by the Bihar Police.
