Patna-Muzaffarpur Road and Nehru Path to Become Bihar’s Model Roads for Safety

By Neeraj Kumar
Patna: Two major roads in Bihar—the 50-kilometre stretch between Patna and Muzaffarpur and Nehru Path (Bailey Road) in Patna—are set to become models of 100% road safety and traffic engineering. The traffic department has initiated this project based on recommendations from a state committee formed to address road accidents. Once implemented, this model will be expanded across Bihar.

Survey and Analysis

Traffic ADG Sudhanshu Kumar stated that accident-prone areas have been identified through a detailed analysis of road accident data. The initiative includes collaboration among various departments to address the root causes of accidents.

Dr Rohit Baluja, an expert from the Institute of Road Traffic Education, Faridabad, recently conducted a survey and submitted a project report. Following a meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, actionable points have been identified, and phase-wise implementation is underway. Engineering solutions for these roads are expected to be finalised by the third week of January.

Traffic Force Expansion

The state government has approved 4,215 posts for traffic police stations across 28 districts, in addition to the existing forces in 12 districts. Furthermore, 1,560 personnel will be deployed under the highway patrolling scheme, and Patna district will receive 1,807 additional traffic personnel.

Patna Junction Congestion Solutions

A permanent solution to the traffic jams near Patna Junction Golambar will only be possible after ongoing construction projects, such as the metro and underpasses, are completed. However, as a temporary measure, the traffic police have proposed reducing the roundabout size near Patna Junction. Additionally, a U-turn facility near pillar numbers 13-14 before the roundabout has been recommended to ease congestion.

This initiative marks a significant step towards improving road safety and traffic management across Bihar.
