Bihar Government to Revamp Home Guard Rules, Offer Opportunity to Aspiring Police Constables

By Neeraj Kumar

Patna: The Bihar government is set to amend the rules for appointing Home Guards, providing a new opportunity for young men and women who narrowly missed securing constable positions in the Bihar Police. Preparations are underway to make the rules more flexible, with high-level meetings of administrative and police officials already conducted. The concerned departments have been tasked with drafting the necessary amendments, expected to be finalised soon.

To become a constable in Bihar, candidates must pass the intermediate or equivalent examination and clear both written and physical tests. A merit list is then prepared, and successful candidates are appointed. The state government is considering accommodating candidates who missed the constable selection process by recruiting them as Home Guards.

After joining as a Home Guard, eligible candidates will still have the chance to appear in future constable recruitment examinations, subject to meeting the criteria. Discussions are ongoing among senior officials to determine the required rule changes for this initiative.

In a parallel development, the Bihar government is exploring opportunities for Agniveers—former soldiers of the Indian Army—within the Bihar Police. Initial plans include appointing them to the Bihar Special Military Battalion-16, a unit specifically created for retired military personnel. Further integration into the regular police force is also under consideration.
