Patna: According to the Commercial Tax Department, Bihar collected ₹1,491 crore in GST revenue in August 2024, marking an 8% increase compared to the ₹1,379 crore collected in August 2023. However, this figure reflects a decrease from July 2024, when ₹1,569 crore was deposited in the state treasury through GST, surpassing both the August 2024 figure and the ₹1,488 crore collected in July 2023. Nationally, GST collection reached ₹1.75 lakh crore in August 2024, a 10% increase from the same month last year.

The Commercial Tax Department attributes this growth to improved monitoring of input tax credit and ongoing efforts to curb tax evasion in Bihar. Despite the year-on-year increase, August’s GST collection saw a decline from the previous month, reflecting a broader trend observed at the national level, where GST revenue dropped from ₹1.82 lakh crore in July 2024.

In February 2024, Bihar’s GST collection stood at ₹1,491 crore, slightly lower than the ₹1,499 crore collected in February 2023. March 2024 saw the highest monthly tax collection in the state so far, with a total of ₹5,403.15 crore. In April 2024, Bihar’s GST collection was ₹1,992 crore, a significant 23% increase compared to ₹1,625 crore in April 2023. May 2024 also saw a notable rise, with ₹1,366 crore collected, 11% more than in May 2023.

It is anticipated that GST collection will increase in the coming months due to upcoming festivals. The Financial and Commercial Tax Department is making continuous efforts to enhance monitoring of input tax credit and to prevent tax evasion, which are expected to further bolster GST revenue in the state.
