Patna: Patna is set to enter a new era of luxury hospitality, with the path cleared for the construction of a 500-room five-star hotel under the globally renowned Taj brand on prime land at Bankipur Bus Stand. The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation Limited (BSTDCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sarga Hotel Pvt. Ltd. under the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The agreement, signed in the presence of Tourism Minister Arun Shankar Prasad, lays the foundation for Patna’s second Taj hotel. The property will be operated by The Indian Hotels Company Limited under the Taj brand.
The minister said that a rapidly developing city such as Patna requires high-quality accommodation to meet growing demand. The state government is facilitating the construction of three five-star hotels in the capital to provide improved facilities for tourists and business travellers.
He said the first Taj hotel (City Centre) is already under construction, the agreement for the second has now been finalised, and the process for the third is underway. The initiative, he added, marks a historic step for Bihar’s tourism and hospitality sector.
The Bankipur Bus Stand site has been described as highly suitable for hotel development. The Ganga flows on one side, while the historic Gandhi Maidan lies opposite, and the Samrat Ashok Convention Centre is located nearby. Situated in the heart of Patna, the location is expected to be ideal for tourists, business visitors and conference events, significantly enhancing the hotel’s accessibility and appeal.
BSTDCL Managing Director Nand Kishore said the decision was taken after the land was transferred from the Transport Department. Sarga Hotel Pvt. Ltd., which submitted the lowest bid, was selected for the project and will pay the government an annual licence premium of ₹18.60 crore along with GST.
The hotel will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include 350 rooms, while the second will add 150 more. The selected company is required to complete the first phase within four years and begin hotel operations by January 2030.
K Mohanchandran, Senior Vice-President of Taj Hotels, said the new Taj property at Bankipur would represent one of the finest versions of the brand in India. He noted that the project aligns with IHCL’s strategy in view of Patna’s rapid development and improving connectivity.
Sarga Hotel Pvt. Ltd. Director Nityanand Sonthalia said the company would deliver a world-class five-star hotel for residents of Patna and visiting guests within the stipulated timeframe, with special emphasis on quality and timely execution.
The project stems from a decision taken by the Nitish Cabinet in 2025 approving three five-star hotels in Patna. Construction of the first hotel is progressing swiftly, the agreement for the second has been completed, and work on the third is moving forward. The development is expected to boost the state’s economy and generate employment opportunities.
The state government is also working to develop modern amenities around major tourist destinations. Apart from Bodh Gaya and Rajgir, tourist footfall is expected to rise at sites such as the Janaki Temple in Sitamarhi. The new Taj hotel in Patna is expected to give fresh momentum to tourism, strengthening Bihar’s presence on both the national and international tourism map.
