Gurugram: Hyundai Motor India Ltd announced on Monday that its much-anticipated intelligent SUV will be called the Hyundai Bayon. The new global SUV will join the company’s expanding India lineup and is positioned as an intelligent mobility offering for a new generation of customers.
The Bayon is designed to embody Hyundai’s global design and product philosophy, combining innovation, expression, and emotion with a clear sense of purpose, the company said. It targets a new generation of customers in India with an intelligent mobility experience tailored for the evolving market.
Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO of HMIL, said the new SUV represents a broader ambition for the company.
‘With Hyundai BAYON, we are introducing more than a new SUV. BAYON represents a new mindset – one that reflects our ambition to create experiences that are intelligent, intuitive and meaningful for our customers,’ Garg said.
‘At Hyundai, we believe that every new product is an opportunity to push ourselves further, guided by our passion for creating mobility experiences that enrich people’s lives. With BAYON, we have once again challenged ourselves to pursue perfection in the details that matter, while staying true to our belief that technology creates its greatest value when it becomes effortless and seamlessly integrated into our customers’ everyday lives. We look forward to sharing more about Hyundai BAYON with India in the coming weeks,’ he added.
The name Bayon is inspired by Bayonne, a city in the French Basque Country known for its dynamic spirit and distinctive character. Hyundai said the selection reflects its global design philosophy and signals the arrival of a new SUV aimed at adventure and excitement for Indian customers.
Hyundai also unveiled a name reveal film for the upcoming SUV. The film depicts a futuristic world where intelligence and imagination converge, showing a series of intelligent elements coming together piece by piece to form the name BAYON. It ends with the tagline ‘Intelligence ON.’
Earlier this month, a Bayon test mule was spotted wearing white camouflage featuring the prominent message ‘BRING IT ON,’ along with words such as Innovation, Transformation, Inspiration, Reflection, Expression, Selection and Evolution. The repeated emphasis on ‘ON’ now appears to have been part of Hyundai’s pre-launch campaign.
The test mule had an upright stance, a relatively flat roof, pronounced wheel arches, roof rails and conventional pull-type door handles. At the front, the SUV appears to feature a split-lighting setup, with a slim lighting signature positioned high on the fascia and the primary lamps mounted lower down.
The side profile gets a rising window line and a prominent kink around the C-pillar, while the rear features a horizontal light signature, upright windscreen and roof-mounted spoiler. The proportions suggest the India-spec Bayon will have a more conventional SUV stance than the European-spec model sold in international markets.
The cabin is expected to feature a modern dashboard with two integrated digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The steering wheel gets Hyundai’s latest four-dot motif. Other expected equipment includes a 360-degree camera, sunroof, connected-car technology and ADAS features, though the final equipment list will likely vary by variant.
Hyundai has not confirmed the Bayon’s engine options. The SUV is expected to use the company’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 115bhp and 143.8Nm in the Creta. The engine could be offered with a six-speed manual and CVT. A factory-fitted CNG powertrain is also expected to be part of the Bayon line-up.
The Hyundai Bayon is expected to sit between the Venue and Creta in the company’s India portfolio. It could be priced in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh range, although Hyundai is yet to confirm pricing or launch details.
The name announcement marks the first chapter in the Hyundai Bayon journey. HMIL said more details about the upcoming intelligent SUV will be revealed in the coming days.
