Patna: After stepping down from the Chief Minister’s post, Nitish Kumar convened the first major meeting of the Janata Dal (United) to select a new leader of the legislature party. However, the meeting, which lasted around half an hour, did not result in a decision on Monday. Instead, the party unanimously authorised its national president, Nitish Kumar, to take the final call.
Briefing the media after the meeting held at the Nitish Kumar’s residence, JD(U) chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said the legislature party had unanimously empowered Nitish Kumar to choose the new leader. He added that members also expressed gratitude for Nitish Kumar’s work, his sacrifices, and the identity Bihar has gained at national and international levels under his leadership.
“The legislature party has unanimously authorised the national president, Nitish Kumar, to select its leader. The party has also expressed its appreciation for his achievements,” Neeraj Kumar said.
The spokesperson further stated that in his address, Nitish Kumar said he would continue to tour various parts of Bihar, interact with party leaders, and review both organisational and government work to accelerate the state’s development.

Dismissing speculation of any dispute, Neeraj Kumar asserted, “There was no disagreement. The very name of our party is ‘United’.” He also clarified that no other names were discussed during the meeting.
On queries regarding Nishant Kumar, Neeraj Kumar said the party had not made any formal announcement about his role or possible political engagements.
The delay in selecting a leader has fuelled speculation within political circles. During the meeting, a proposal by Vijay Kumar Chaudhary to authorise Nitish Kumar was unanimously approved.
Meanwhile, posters have surfaced ahead of the meeting suggesting Nishant Kumar as a potential leader, with slogans such as “If not Nitish, then Nishant”. However, as Nishant Kumar is not currently a member of either House, he cannot be appointed leader of the legislature party. His name could only be considered after he is elected to the Legislative Council or Assembly.
