Patna: Inspired by the Ganga Mahotsav held in Haridwar, known as the “Gateway to the Gods,” Patna is set to host its own Ganga Mahotsav on 4th November at NIT Ghat (Gandhi Ghat). The event, organised with support from the Central and State Governments, will include a vibrant marketplace, along with a series of activities such as marathons, music performances, rangoli and sand art competitions, and photography contests.
Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitin Nabin explained that the primary aim of the Ganga Mahotsav in Patna is to foster river conservation, highlight the cultural and spiritual significance of the Ganga, and raise public awareness on cleanliness. The festival will also serve as the flag-off ceremony for the Ganga Mahila Rafting Abhiyan, an initiative organised in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF). According to Minister Nabin, this year’s Ganga Mahotsav will be a model river festival, with participation anticipated from numerous river cities across the country.
Abhay Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, noted that Rs 11 lakh has been allocated to Patna’s District Ganga Committee for the event. A “Haat on the Ghat” programme will also be part of the festival, featuring stalls showcasing different aspects of the Namami Gange project, a nationwide initiative aimed at cleaning and rejuvenating the Ganga.
The event will engage young minds in river conservation through activities such as quizzes, film screenings, magic shows, puppet shows, and painting competitions. Street plays will also be performed to promote awareness about river conservation among the youth.
Additionally, the Ganga Mahotsav will feature a special session dedicated to the cultural journey of India’s rivers, focusing on the rich stories and traditions surrounding them. An exhibition on the Namami Gange project will provide insight into various aspects of this initiative, along with a small food festival as part of the celebration.
