Patna: The introduction of smart prepaid meters in Bihar has sparked ongoing political controversy. While the government highlights their benefits, the opposition party has already staged protests against the initiative. Despite this, over five lakh consumers in the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) area have adopted smart prepaid meters. The installation drive has now extended to government offices and residences of officials across all levels.
IntelliSmart Infrastructure has been tasked with installing 35 lakh smart prepaid meters across seven circles in 13 districts under SBPDCL. Khwaja Jamal, Senior Protocol Officer of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), confirmed the rollout of these meters in government offices and residences, noting that this move aims to boost public confidence in the new technology.
“Smart prepaid meters are also being installed in government offices and residences of officials at all levels. This will help instil trust among consumers regarding the efficiency of smart prepaid meters,” Jamal stated.
To increase awareness, BSPHCL has launched a door-to-door campaign to educate consumers about the benefits of these meters. Public engagement efforts include street plays and audio reels, with trained personnel addressing consumer queries. This initiative aims to ensure users fully understand and leverage the advantages of the new system.
BSPHCL is also promoting the Bihar Urja Smart Meter App, which allows users to monitor their daily electricity consumption, view recharge history, and check account balance. The app also provides a platform to resolve electricity-related issues without visiting electricity offices.
According to Jamal, Bihar has emerged as a pioneer in adopting smart prepaid meters, installing the highest number in the country. The total number of users across the state has surpassed 50 lakh.
