Patna, June 26: Anju Devi has been elected as the president of the Patna Zila Parishad in the election held on Wednesday at the Collectorate building. Anju Devi secured 33 votes, defeating her rival Rehana Parveen, the member representing area number 38 from Athmal Gola, who received 5 votes. Outgoing Zila Parishad president Kumari Stuti Gupta boycotted the voting and left the venue before the election commenced.

Anju Devi, who has previously held the position of Zila Parishad president, will soon take the oath of office again. The Patna Zila Parishad has 44 elected members, requiring a minimum of 23 votes to win. Anju Devi received 33 votes, while Rehana Parveen garnered five votes, with one vote deemed invalid. Three members were absent, and two boycotted the election, including former president Kumari Stuti Gupta, who alleged election rigging.

A no-confidence motion was brought against Kumari Stuti Gupta a few months ago, leading to the vacancy of the president’s post. Following the passing of the no-confidence motion, the State Election Commission ordered the election, which was held on Wednesday. Kumari Stuti Gupta has filed a petition in the Supreme Court concerning the lack of quorum in the meeting regarding the no-confidence motion. The petition is set to be heard on July 29.

CPIM Patna District Secretary Manoj Kumar Chandravanshi congratulated Anju Devi on her victory, expressing hope that under her leadership, the pace of development in Patna district will accelerate. He acknowledged some good works accomplished during her previous tenure and hoped she would continue and complete the ongoing development projects.
