Absconding Doctor Ajay Kumar Arrested After 16-Day Manhunt; Medical Exam Scam Exposed

By Neeraj Kumar

Patna: After a 16-day search, absconding doctor Ajay Kumar was finally arrested on Thursday by TOP in-charge Shubham Kumar at PMCH. Acting on a tip-off that Dr Ajay would visit PMCH to submit his counselling form, the police set a trap near Hathua Ward. Since Thursday was the last day for counselling, plain-clothes officers stationed themselves in the area. As Dr Ajay descended the stairs, he was apprehended.

“I spotted him coming down the stairs and said, ‘Dhappa, Doctor Sahab.’ He was stunned. Despite his attempts to disguise himself with a mask and muffler, he couldn’t escape our vigilance,” said Shubham Kumar.

Before this, police had conducted raids in Vaishali and Muzaffarpur. Dr Ajay had also filed a bail petition in Patna Civil Court, but the police’s diligence ensured his arrest. Along with Ajay, five other MBBS and PG doctors are under investigation and are expected to be arrested soon.

The Case Unfolds:

The investigation into Dr Ajay Kumar began after a fire broke out in a room on the second floor of Chanakya Hostel at PMCH. Firefighters discovered burnt currency notes worth ₹10–12 lakh, several NEET-PG admit cards, burnt MBBS OMR sheets, and half-empty liquor bottles.

Dr Ajay, a resident of Samastipur district, is accused of orchestrating a medical exam scam. He allegedly arranged for scholars to sit exams like MBBS and NEET-UG in exchange for hefty sums of money. Sources revealed he even facilitated fake candidates for internal medical exams to help students pass.

CBI Joins the Investigation:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now stepped in. On Monday, a CBI team spent four hours investigating the case at PMCH. They instructed the Pirbahor and TOP police stations to share all relevant information.

Further investigation revealed that Dr Ajay occupied three rooms in Chanakya Hostel: one on the ground floor, one on the second floor, and one on the sixth floor. One of these rooms was allotted under another doctor’s name.

Shocking Revelations:

  • Burnt currency notes worth ₹10–12 lakh were recovered.
  • Multiple NEET-PG admit cards and burnt MBBS OMR sheets from Aryabhatta Knowledge University were found.
  • Evidence of liquor consumption in the hostel was uncovered.

Dr Ajay had passed his PG in 2022 and was allegedly running a racket involving admissions and exams. He charged large sums to secure seats in medical colleges and to assist students in passing internal exams.

Police and CBI Investigations Continue:

The police are now focusing on tracing Dr Ajay’s activities at NMCH, AIIMS, and Nalanda. Investigations suggest that he played a key role in a larger medical mafia.

Dr Ajay’s arrest is expected to uncover more details about this widespread scam. The authorities are also questioning other doctors linked to the case and are determined to bring all culprits to justice.
