Patna: Kolkata’s Sunit Chowrasia, making his way back after a long injury layoff, fired a classy seven-under 65 in round two to establish a healthy three-shot lead at the INR 25 lakh Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship 2026 Hosted by Patna Golf Club, the fourth event of the 2026 DP World PGTI NexGen season.
Sunit Chowrasia (71-65), nephew of the legendary SSP Chawrasia, who was in tied sixth place, six shots off the lead, after round one, matched the tournament low of 65 on day two to gain five spots and take the lead with a total score of eight-under 136.
Rajesh Kumar Gautam (70-69), a winner on the NexGen this season, was in second place at a total of five-under 139 following his second-round effort of 69.
Patna’s Md Nawab was the highest-placed among the local professionals after he returned a 73 to be placed tied sixth at one-under 143.
Round one leader Rohit Baisoya slipped to tied sixth place as a result of his second round of 78.
The Patna Golf Club is a par-72 nine-hole course where the nine holes are played twice to comprise a round.
The cut was declared at seven-over 151. Forty-two professionals made the cut.
Sunit Chowrasia was off to a flying start with six birdies on the first 12 holes. Sunit, who got back to playing professional golf in February this year after a three-and-a-half-year break due to a back injury, then suffered a minor blip with a bogey on the 14th but ended the round on a positive note with birdies on the 15th and 17th.
Sunit said, “I started really well by converting some tricky putts and making a good up and down early in the round. I judged the greens well that helped me drain putts at some crucial moments in the round. I have been hitting the ball well for quite some time but today even my putting was excellent.
“I’ve had a long injury layoff but I have fully recovered now. As a result of the back injury. I’ve had to make some changes in my swing. I feel the changes are slowly settling into my game. My uncle Mr. SSP Chawrasia has been a great source of support through my tough time when I was making my way back from injury. His encouragement and advice have been invaluable.”
