Bhagalpur: A bird flu scare has been triggered in Bhagalpur district following serum test results of dead crows testing positive for avian influenza (H5N1), commonly referred as bird flu.
It may be mentioned quite substantial number of carcasses of crows were found at Naugachia subdivision of district on January 11 near subdivisional office.
Informed by people about dead crows the carcasses were collected and serum samples of the dead birds were sent for testing by local animal husbandry department.
As per information avian influenza has been established in serum test results received from Regional Diagnostic Laboratory, Kolkata besides Animal Health &Production, Patna.
Media reports quoting an official of local animal husbandry department has stated presence of bird flu virus has been confirmed in test results of serum samples.
The reports however say there is no need of much concern at present since infection is mostly restricted to wild birds. There is no poultry firm located in vicinity of the place where crow carcasses were found, the media report has further stated quoting the animal husbandry department official.
The sanitization work of effected area has already started since yesterday. An animal husbandry department team has been sent to the affected area for further serum sampling of birds.
The poultries located in adjoining areas would be covered for serum sampling it has been decided. Bird culling a preventive measure taken to restrict spread of avian influenza though has not started yet however a decision to this effect might be taken soon by animal husbandry department after further assessing gravity of the situation.
