Patna: The long-pending construction of Purnia Airport has seen renewed activity, with significant progress reported recently. JD(U) National Executive President and Member of Parliament Sanjay Jha shared updates on social media, announcing two major developments: the tender for constructing the interim terminal building has been issued, and an MoU has been signed for the boundary wall construction.
According to Sanjay Jha, the design for the interim terminal at Purnia Airport is complete, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the tendering process. Once awarded, the terminal is expected to be completed within four months. Additionally, the MoU between the AAI and the Bihar government’s Building Construction Department marks a crucial step in advancing the airport’s infrastructure.
Expressing his gratitude, Jha praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching the Udaan scheme, which aims to make air travel accessible to common people in smaller towns. He acknowledged the allocation of two airports to Bihar under this scheme and extended thanks to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his decision to establish an Udaan airport in Purnia and for his consistent oversight of the project.
Jha highlighted his visit to Purnia on 24 August 2024, during which he reviewed ongoing work at the airport. He addressed challenges surrounding the operationalisation of a civil terminal at the Purnia military airport and directed officials to expedite construction. Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of ensuring robust road connectivity and essential facilities to facilitate smooth passenger movement.
He also revealed that he had discussed the progress of Purnia Airport during a meeting of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture in New Delhi. “We are optimistic that Purnia Airport will replicate the success of Darbhanga Airport, which has been setting new benchmarks. The opening of Purnia Airport will be a significant boon for people in the surrounding districts,” Jha stated.
Purnia Airport has been a point of contention in the past. During Nitish Kumar’s tenure in the Mahagathbandhan, the project faced delays. The primary obstacle was land acquisition. However, recent developments, including the issuance of a tender worth ₹45.45 crore for the interim terminal, suggest that air services may commence next year.
The successful completion of Purnia Airport is anticipated to provide a significant boost to connectivity and economic development in the region.
