Patna: The vibrant Sonpur Fair, located 25 km from Patna and 3 km from Hajipur, continues to draw large crowds daily. Visitors are flocking to enjoy the fair’s attractions, from shopping for goods to admiring the animals on display, including a buffalo valued at ₹2 crore. However, the absence of operational theatres at the fair has left theatre enthusiasts disheartened and operators facing financial losses.
Theatres Await Administrative Approval
Despite the usual buzz around Sonpur Fair, several theatres remain closed as they await licences from the administration. Theatre operators, who have invested ₹25–35 lakh each in setting up their venues, are facing mounting losses. The delay has also impacted the livelihood of nearly 1,000 individuals who depend on these performances.
This year, one theatre has been set up each in Gai and Hathi Bazar, three in the Nakhas area, and another in Bachcha Babu’s Haata. While the stages and tents are ready, performances have been stalled due to the lack of administrative approval. Visitors, hopeful of enjoying theatrical entertainment, often leave the area disappointed.
Artists in Limbo
Around 1,000 male and female artists from across India have arrived to perform at the fair. The delay in obtaining licences has caused significant inconvenience, with iconic venues like Shobha Samrat Theatre and India Theatre falling silent this year.
Administrative Response
Sonpur Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Ashish Kumar acknowledged the issue, stating that applications from theatre and swing operators have now been received. Licences are expected to be issued within a day or two, allowing the theatres to open and bring much-awaited entertainment to the fair.
