Patna: In a new initiative, the electricity company in Bihar has made it compulsory for its employees to install smart prepaid meters in their residential premises. This move follows the government’s efforts to promote smart meters and increase public awareness. According to the company’s directive, employees must install smart meters in order to continue receiving the benefit of free electricity each month.
Failure to install smart meters will result in the employees losing their entitlement to free electricity. The company’s order is expected to affect at least 8,000 employees. South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited’s statement highlights that over 50 lakh smart meters have been installed across the state so far, yet concerns regarding the functionality and reliability of these meters persist.
Many people continue to harbour misconceptions about smart meters. To address this, the company has mandated that all its employees must have smart meters installed. As the electricity company offers free electricity up to a certain limit each month to its staff, the recent directive underscores that this benefit will only be available to those who comply with the smart meter installation requirement.
