Patna: Bihar is gradually becoming a popular tourist destination. In the first five months of 2024, the state welcomed 1.78 crore tourists, marking an impressive 48% increase compared to the same period last year. In 2023, 1.21 crore tourists visited Bihar from January to May, whereas this year the figure rose to 1.78 crore, an increase of 57.56 lakh tourists. Of these, 1.76 crore were domestic tourists and 24.74 lakh were foreign tourists. Most foreign tourists visited Gaya-Bodhgaya, while domestic tourists predominantly traveled to Patna.
According to data released by the Tourism Department, January saw the highest number of tourists this year, with 42.93 lakh visitors. This included 42 lakh domestic tourists and over 86,000 foreign tourists. In March, 42.59 lakh tourists visited, including more than 58,000 foreign tourists. February had 32.76 lakh tourists, with over 77,000 being foreign visitors.
Tourism numbers had significantly declined in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since 2022, there has been a noticeable improvement, leading to a substantial increase in tourist numbers. Last year, Bihar set a record with 8.21 crore tourists.
The increase in tourist numbers can be attributed to the branding and promotion efforts by the Bihar Tourism Department. This has successfully attracted both domestic and international tourists. Popular destinations include Gaya, Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, and Patna. Tourist attractions such as Rajgir’s Nature and Jungle Safari, and the Glass Bridge are also gaining popularity.
