Lord Ganesha
Patna: Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed on Monday, September 14, 2026, on the Chaturthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ganesha is believed to have manifested on this day. Devotees observe a fast and perform special prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
According to astrology and traditional religious practices, performing certain remedies on Ganesh Chaturthi is believed to please Lord Ganesha and help devotees fulfil their wishes. Those wishing to observe these practices on the festival may perform any one of the following rituals according to tradition:
1. Abhishek of Lord Ganesha
Scriptures prescribe performing an Abhishek, or ritual bathing, of Lord Ganesha. On Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees can bathe the idol with pure water while reciting the Ganapati Atharvashirsha. Mawa laddoos can then be offered as prasad and distributed among devotees.
2. Install a Ganesh Yantra
According to astrology, the Ganesh Yantra is considered a powerful spiritual symbol. Devotees can install and worship it at home on Ganesh Chaturthi. Traditional belief holds that keeping the yantra at home protects the household from negative or harmful energies.
3. Feed green fodder to an elephant
Those facing persistent difficulties in life can feed green fodder to an elephant on Ganesh Chaturthi and visit a Ganesh temple to pray for relief from their problems. According to the belief associated with this practice, difficulties may gradually ease after performing the ritual.
4. Offer ghee and jaggery for financial prosperity
For those seeking financial stability, devotees can offer pure ghee and jaggery to Lord Ganesha after taking a bath in the morning. After some time, the ghee and jaggery should be fed to a cow. This traditional remedy is believed to help overcome financial difficulties.
5. Offer 21 jaggery balls with Durva
After taking a bath on Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees can visit a nearby Ganesh temple and offer 21 small balls made of jaggery along with Durva grass. According to traditional belief, Lord Ganesha may fulfil the sincere wishes of devotees who perform this ritual.
6. Worship a yellow Ganesha idol for career growth
Devotees can install a yellow-coloured idol of Lord Ganesha at home and worship it on Ganesh Chaturthi. During the puja, five pieces of turmeric can be offered while chanting the mantra “Shri Ganadhipataye Namah”. This should be followed by offering 108 strands of Durva smeared with wet turmeric while chanting “Shri Gajavaktram Namo Namah”. Performing this ritual for 10 consecutive days is traditionally believed to increase the chances of promotion.
7. Donate to the needy
Devotees can visit a Ganesh temple on Ganesh Chaturthi and, after seeking the deity’s blessings, donate according to their means. Clothes, food, fruits and grains can be given to those in need. A small monetary donation, or dakshina, may also be offered. Hindu tradition considers charity a source of spiritual merit and believes that such acts please Lord Ganesha.
8. Offer malpua for a daughter’s marriage
If a daughter’s marriage is facing delays, devotees can offer malpua to Lord Ganesha and observe a fast on Ganesh Chaturthi with the wish of finding a suitable match for her. Traditional belief holds that favourable prospects for marriage may develop soon.
9. Make Ganesha idols from Durva grass
Devotees can make small representations of Lord Ganesha using Durva grass and worship them on Ganesh Chaturthi. Modaks, jaggery, fruits and mawa-based sweets can be offered to the deity. According to traditional belief, this ritual can help fulfil devotees’ wishes.
10. Offer yellow sweets for marriage prospects
If a boy is facing difficulties in getting married, he can offer yellow-coloured sweets to Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi. According to the belief associated with this remedy, it may help create favourable prospects for marriage.
11. Observe a fast and recite Ganapati Atharvashirsha
Devotees can observe a fast on Ganesh Chaturthi and recite the Ganapati Atharvashirsha at home in the evening. Til laddoos can then be offered to Lord Ganesha. The fast can be broken with the prasad, followed by a prayer seeking the fulfilment of one’s wishes.
