Patna: An evening of Hindustani classical music featuring a sarod recital by Dr Rita Das of the Maihar Gharana and a Dhrupad vocal performance by Sanjeev Manish rekindled Patna’s rich tradition of classical music appreciation. The programme, Dhruv Swar, was organised by Dhrupad Gurukulam Foundation, Hyderabad, in collaboration with Rangsetu at the Bihar Museum gallery recently.
The auditorium resonated with the meditative strains of the sarod’s alaap, followed by compositions in fast and extremely fast tempos, while the deep, resonant notes of Dhrupad created an immersive musical experience.
Dr Rita Das, a leading exponent of the Maihar Seniya Gharana and Bihar’s first and only woman sarod artiste, opened her recital with an alaap in Raag Durga. She then presented a melodious interpretation of Raag Charukeshi, a raga of Carnatic origin. Her dazzling gats in drut and ati-drut laya drew enthusiastic applause, while the high-energy jhala concluded to a thunderous ovation. She was accompanied on the tabla by Ashok Kurmi.
The programme concluded with a Dhrupad recital by Sanjeev Manish, who rendered Raag Megh before bringing the evening to a close with a devotional bhajan by Surdas. Earlier, Anupama Singh had also presented a Dhrupad performance.
Professor Mayawati Shankar graced the occasion as the chief guest. The event was compered by Surendra Singh, with special support from Barun Singh.
