Sitamarhi: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Saturday inaugurated the ‘Sitamarhi Mahotsav–2026’ by lighting the ceremonial lamp at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi district on the occasion of Janaki Navami.
The District Magistrate, Ruchi Pandey, welcomed the Chief Minister by presenting a memento and a sapling. Addressing the gathering, Choudhary said it was a matter of pride for him to visit the birthplace of Mata Sita after assuming office, describing the occasion as a blessing.
He noted that Punaura Dham, believed to be the birthplace of Mata Janaki, is being developed comprehensively. Recalling last year’s visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the foundation-laying ceremony, he said the region had witnessed drought-like conditions earlier, but rainfall began during the ceremony and continued thereafter, bringing prosperity to the area.
The Chief Minister stated that the development of the site was earlier targeted for completion by June 2029, but the government has now directed officials to complete the work by December 31, 2028. He added that the site would be developed as a major tourist destination.

Referring to developments in Ayodhya, he said a grand temple dedicated to Lord Ram has been established and a corridor developed for the benefit of devotees. He also mentioned that Nitish Kumar had announced the construction of a new township named ‘Sitapuram’ in Sitamarhi, which has already received cabinet approval.
Samrat Choudhary said all sites associated with Mata Janaki would be connected to Punaura Dham to facilitate pilgrimage and research activities. He also announced that an advanced hospital is under construction in the area and will be named ‘Mata Sita Medical College’.
The Chief Minister further highlighted ongoing investments in Bihar, including thermal power projects at Pirpainti and Nabinagar, amounting to ₹1.36 lakh crore. He said an additional ₹5 lakh crore investment is expected in the coming year, which would generate employment within the state and reduce migration.
“Under the blessings of Mata Janaki, Bihar is moving towards prosperity,” he said, extending greetings to the people on the occasion of Janaki Navami.
The event was also addressed by Member of Parliament Devesh Chandra Thakur and BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi. The District Magistrate delivered the welcome address, while MLA Sunil Kumar Pintu proposed the vote of thanks.
Several ministers, legislators, public representatives, senior officials, and a large number of local residents were present on the occasion.
