Patna: A review meeting was held today at the Bihar State Sports Authority (BSSA) to assess the performance of coaches associated with the state’s Eklavya Residential Sports Training Centres, Khelo India Small Centres, and the authority itself. More than 100 coaches from various sporting disciplines participated in the meeting.
Providing details, Director General and Chief Executive Officer Raveendran Sankaran stated that nurturing sporting talent at the grassroots level through structured training, and preparing athletes for national and international competitions, remains a key priority and commitment of the government. He emphasised that coaches play a crucial role in achieving this objective.
To develop athletes at the foundational level across multiple sports, the state is establishing 64 Eklavya Residential Sports Training Centres in different districts of Bihar. Players are selected through trials and admitted to these centres, where the government ensures comprehensive facilities, including accommodation, sports equipment, nutrition, education, and training. Similar arrangements have also been made at over 30 Khelo India Small Centres across the state.

The review meeting, chaired by Sankaran and attended by Deputy Director Himanshu Singh and Sports Executive Anandi Kumar, saw coaches from across the state present progress reports of their respective centres. They also highlighted requirements, challenges, and areas for improvement.
Sankaran issued several key directives to enhance the quality and functioning of these training centres, with particular emphasis on athletes’ nutrition, accommodation, and training standards. He underscored that players emerging from these centres have the potential to represent the state and the nation in future, and therefore require careful attention in all aspects of their development. He warned that any negligence on the part of coaches in this regard would not be tolerated.
