Patna: Preparations are in full swing to restart the toy train, which has been non-operational for nine years at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (Patna Zoo). A recent survey conducted by the Danapur Railway Division revealed that significant structural modifications are required on the track and route to resume operations.
Planned Changes and Upgrades
The survey highlighted the need for structural modifications near the giraffe enclosure and the food warehouse corner. A small wall will be constructed to stabilise the track, and a bridge will be built near the drain to protect the track from water damage.
The toy train’s track length will be reduced from 3.70 km to 3.5 km. Additionally, the station near the souvenir shop will be revamped with a fresh look and a ticket counter for visitors.
New Route and Features
The revamped toy train will follow a new route, starting and ending at the souvenir shop. It will pass through various enclosures, including hyenas, lions, tigers, bears, giraffes, rhinoceroses, and birds. The train will have two designated halts at the Rhino and Fish House, with a third halt proposed near the elephant enclosure.
The toy train will feature four bogies and an engine, with each bogie accommodating 20 seats, bringing the total seating capacity to 80 passengers. Ticket prices are yet to be decided; the previous rate was ₹10, but it is likely to increase.
Timeline and Funding
In August, the state cabinet approved the revival of the toy train, allocating ₹9.88 crore for the project. The Danapur Railway Division will operate the toy train, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed soon between the Forest Department and the Railway Division.
Work is set to commence in December 2024 and is expected to take 8–9 months to complete. The toy train is anticipated to be operational by June or July 2025, offering a revitalised experience to zoo visitors.
