Patna: Preparations for Makar Sankranti are in full swing across Bihar, with lakhs of devotees expected to take a holy dip in the Ganga River. In light of the large gatherings, the Patna administration has issued precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
Patna District Magistrate (DM) Dr Chandrashekhar Singh has announced a ban on the operation of all private boats on the Ganga and other rivers during the festivities, except those engaged in government duties. The order, effective from the morning of 14 January to the conclusion of the programme on 15 January 2025, aims to prevent overcrowding and avert potential accidents.
In the official directive, Dr Singh stated, “It has been observed that on Makar Sankranti, significant crowds gather on the riverbanks, with many crossing to the opposite side of the Ganga for bathing. This increases the risk of overloading private boats, which can lead to untoward incidents. Therefore, a prohibitory order is essential for public safety and disaster management.”
The order mandates strict enforcement of the ban, emphasising that “no boat should operate without authorisation in the river.” Sub-Divisional Officers, Sub-Divisional Police Officers, Police Station Heads, and Deputed Magistrates have been tasked with ensuring compliance. They are also instructed to prevent overloading on government boats to mitigate risks.
These measures aim to safeguard the devotees and avoid incidents like boat capsizing during the festival. The administration has urged officials to implement the ban rigorously within their jurisdictions throughout the event.
With these precautionary steps, the district administration hopes to ensure a safe and harmonious celebration of Makar Sankranti for all participants.
