Patna: A major administrative decision has been taken at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) Patna following allegations of irregularities and a paper leak in the MBBS examinations. The institute’s internal inquiry committee has submitted its report, which is understood to have confirmed lapses in the examination process. Subsequently, the administration has cancelled the MBBS Second Semester 2025 examination. Action has also been initiated to remove several personnel, teachers and staff associated with the Dean’s Examination Section.
According to information released by the institute, a large-scale reshuffle has been carried out within the examination branch. Show-cause notices have been issued to all personnel and students linked to the Dean’s Examination Section. Three senior faculty members — Dr Anju Singh, Dr Vinod Kumar and Dr Sangeeta Mishra — have been given additional charge as Sub-Deans (Education). Other staff members have also been transferred with immediate effect.
The IGIMS administration stated that “the inquiry report has confirmed irregularities during the examination, making this action necessary. The MBBS Second Semester 2025 examination has been cancelled, and preparations are underway to conduct the process again in a fair manner.” The institute has asserted that those found guilty will face strict action.
The most serious allegations relate to a paper leak during the final-year examination and manipulation of answer sheets. It is alleged that deals ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh were struck to facilitate the leak and tampering. Reports suggest that separate rates were fixed for leaking question papers and altering answer scripts. Suspicious activities have also reportedly been detected in CCTV footage from the examination branch. Preliminary findings have further indicated irregularities related to signatures on answer sheets.
Students have alleged that the matter is not limited to examination malpractice alone but involves the role of certain influential individuals within the institute. They have demanded action against the main accused, warning that removing only junior staff would amount to an attempt to suppress the issue. Students also claim that the inquiry report has been diluted to shield key culprits. The controversy has raised serious questions over the credibility of the examination system at IGIMS, with students calling for a fair probe and stringent action.
The controversy reportedly began on March 13 following an anonymous email sent to the National Medical Commission, alleging a paper leak and financial transactions. Nearly a month later, the institute constituted an internal inquiry committee under Dr Om, which has now submitted its report, triggering administrative action.
Meanwhile, the college principal, Dr Ranjit Guha, has been kept out of the inquiry process. Students and some faculty members have questioned this decision, noting that the principal is primarily responsible for academic and examination matters. Allegations have surfaced that he was not invited to several meetings held after March 13 and was not even provided with a copy of the inquiry report, further deepening the controversy.
IGIMS Deputy Director and spokesperson Dr Vibhuti Prasanna Sinha said that action was initiated after irregularities were confirmed. “The MBBS Second Semester 2025 examination has been cancelled, and show-cause notices have been issued to all personnel and concerned students linked to the Dean’s Examination Section,” he said.
“Strict action will be taken against those found guilty, and the entire inquiry process will be completed in a fair manner,” he added.
