Patna: Construction of the Kanhauli–Sherpur six-lane road under the Patna Ring Road project is expected to commence after the monsoon, with the project currently in the tendering phase. Land acquisition will begin once the executing agency is finalised.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), construction work may start between September and October, a development expected to significantly improve traffic management in the state capital.
The tender process is ongoing and the agency is likely to be selected by the end of March. Land acquisition will follow, which is estimated to take one to two months. This timeline would clear the way for construction to begin soon after the monsoon season ends.
The proposed six-lane stretch between Sherpur and Kanhauli will span approximately 9 kilometres and forms a crucial segment of the Patna Ring Road, aimed at easing the city’s traffic congestion.
The project cost has been estimated at ₹777.79 crore, to be shared equally by the Central and State governments. Earlier hurdles related to funding have now been resolved following mutual agreement.
A major junction will be developed near Kanhauli to connect several key roads. Additionally, a 1.5-kilometre-long ramp will link to the Kanhauli roundabout, ensuring smoother traffic flow. The road will pass through Patna, Saran and Vaishali districts, and will also connect to the Sherpur–Dighwara Ganga bridge and the Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur bridge. This will ease connectivity towards Ara, Buxar, Gaya and Vaishali.
Once the Patna Ring Road is completed, heavy vehicles will no longer need to enter the city and can instead use the ring road directly, significantly reducing congestion within urban areas.
The project is targeted for completion by 2028 and is expected to bring a major transformation to Patna’s traffic system.
