Patna: The construction of the six-lane cable bridge across the Ganga River, connecting Kacchi Dargah in Patna to Bidupur in Vaishali district, is progressing rapidly. Once operational, the bridge will significantly enhance connectivity between South and North Bihar, reducing the travel distance by 60 kilometres. Additionally, it will streamline access to the Nepal border from Jharkhand via North Bihar.
The new bridge aims to alleviate vehicular pressure on the existing major bridges in Patna, such as the JP Setu, Mahatma Gandhi Setu, and Rajendra Setu, thereby addressing frequent traffic congestion. It will also provide direct road connectivity to Raghopur Diara, which is expected to greatly benefit residents of the area.
This ambitious project, costing approximately ₹4,988 crore, is designed to meet modern infrastructure standards. The main bridge spans 9.76 kilometres, while the total length, including approach roads, exceeds 19 kilometres. The structure is supported by 67 pillars, with cables connecting sections 160 metres apart. The bridge’s height, 13 metres above the water level of the Ganges, accommodates the river’s peak levels during monsoon and floods, allowing smooth passage for water transport vessels beneath.
Construction on the approach roads is in the final stages. A flyover and access road are being built towards Bakhtiyarpur, ensuring seamless connectivity to the Bakhtiyarpur four-lane highway. The bridge will also link with the upcoming Amas-Darbhanga four-lane road, further enhancing regional transport networks.
Originally planned for completion by 2020, the project was delayed due to construction starting five years later than intended, in 2016. However, the bridge is now expected to be completed this year, promising a transformative impact on transportation and economic activity across Bihar.
