Patna: Electricity tariffs are set to increase in Bihar, with new rates established for industrial connections. Industries will soon be required to pay revised charges for electricity connections under the newly fixed rates by the electricity company. These changes have been proposed to the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission for approval and will be implemented as soon commission gives its consent.
The new rates will remain in effect for the next two years, covering connections ranging from 3 to 150 kilowatts. For a 3-kilowatt connection, the charge will be ₹2,700, while connections between 45 and 150 kilowatts will cost ₹7,000 per kilowatt. Additional charges will apply for exceeding the allotted electricity usage.
Small entrepreneurs, categorised under domestic rates, will need to pay ₹2,700 for a connection up to three kilowatts. This includes infrastructure support from the electricity company for up to 500 metres. For a single-phase connection of up to four kilowatts, the fee will be ₹4,500, and for connections up to seven kilowatts, a fee of ₹500 per kilowatt will apply.
For connections between five and 19 kilowatts in LT three-phase, the charge will be ₹9,150 per kilowatt. For connections between 20 and 44 kilowatts, the rate increases to ₹9,700 per kilowatt. These new rates will come into effect shortly.
It should be noted that these new tariffs are specific to industrial use and do not apply to large buildings, apartments, or shops. The rates have been set exclusively for factories.
In addition, the installation of smart prepaid meters is progressing rapidly in Bihar. To date, 17.70 lakh smart meters have been installed in urban areas and 31.15 lakh in rural regions.
The electricity department is also addressing consumer complaints by organising special camps at every electricity office across the state on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10 am to 1 pm, where issues raised are promptly resolved.
