Patna: Renowned folk singer and Padma Shri awardee Sharda Sinha, known as the “Nightingale of Bihar,” passed away on Tuesday evening at Delhi’s AIIMS. The 72-year-old singer had been hospitalised following a health decline last month and was receiving treatment in the ICU. Although her condition had stabilised briefly, she was moved to a ventilator on Monday when her health worsened. She passed away late Tuesday, leaving her fans and well-wishers in deep sorrow.
Her passing, coinciding with the Chhath festival—a celebration synonymous with her iconic songs—has left a void in the hearts of her admirers across the country. Her popular Chhath songs, still resonating across Bihar, now hold a bittersweet significance for her fans and the music community.
Tributes poured in from across India, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing profound grief over her passing. He remembered her as a pioneering voice who brought new dimensions to folk music, stating, “Sharda Sinha ji will always be remembered for her melodious voice and traditional songs. Her demise is a great loss for the music world. My condolences go out to her family and fans.”
Sharda Sinha’s son, Anshuman, had kept her supporters updated on her health condition via social media, sharing that her health had deteriorated due to an infection. Despite a brief flicker of hope when her condition seemed to stabilise, her final days were marked by a critical turn. Her passing leaves an irreplaceable gap in the world of folk music and in the hearts of those who cherished her voice.
