Patna: Bihar’s Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has stepped up its crackdown on cyber crime in 2025, delivering major results through the NCRP helpline 1930 and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Till December 15, officials responded to 24.38 lakh phone calls, registering online complaints of cyber fraud and providing guidance and assistance to victims.
According to the EOU, a total of 1.10 lakh online complaints related to financial cyber fraud were lodged on the NCRP portal this year, along with 24,100 complaints linked to social media and other cyber offences. Acting swiftly on these reports, authorities froze ₹106.30 crore in suspicious bank accounts, accounting for 21.74 per cent of the total reported amount.
Cyber police stations across the state helped recover ₹7.36 crore and return it to victims. In 2025, as many as 5,624 cyber crime cases were registered statewide, leading to the arrest of 1,000 cyber criminals. The EOU said the drive against cyber offenders would continue unabated.
Cyber intelligence played a key role in the campaign. So far this year, 9,252 mobile numbers and 38,401 IMEI numbers used in cyber crimes have been blocked. Inputs received through the ‘Pratibimb’ portal and technical analysis were also shared with districts for further action.
Under the special ‘Cyber Prahar’ operation, 171 cyber criminals were arrested till December 15. Investigations identified 616 mule bank accounts, with districts instructed to take legal action. In Begusarai alone, two cases were registered and four accused arrested.
The EOU also tightened its grip on misleading and objectionable content on social media. Based on complaints received till November, the Social Media Patrolling Unit ensured the takedown of 356 objectionable URLs and user IDs. Additionally, 108 FIRs were registered across various police stations over offensive social media posts.
Action was also taken against international cyber crime syndicates. Raids were conducted in Supaul, Vaishali, Bhojpur, Darbhanga and other districts against gangs operating illegal SIM boxes for cyber fraud. Several accused, including key masterminds, were arrested in multiple cases, with large quantities of incriminating material seized.
In another case, a gang running fake websites in Madhepura to steal Aadhaar and identity-related data was busted. Three cyber criminals were arrested and a case registered.
Alongside enforcement, the EOU continued to focus on training and awareness. In 2025, training in cyber crime investigation was provided to 440 police officers, including 46 deputy superintendents of police. Two Bihar police officers completed specialised cyber commando training, while 15 others were selected for the programme.
Statewide, cyber awareness programmes were organised at 683 public places and 445 schools and colleges. Initiatives such as Cyber Awareness Week and ‘Cyber Hackathon 2025’ were also used to sensitise the public and youth to cyber security.
The EOU has further intensified action against illegal agents pushing youths into cyber slavery abroad on false job promises. With support from the Union government, 29 victims were safely brought back from South Asian countries in 2025 so far, with investigations continuing.
