Patna Traffic
From Neeraj Kumar
Patna: Putting road safety at the forefront, the Bihar Transport Department has launched a major crackdown on traffic rule violators across the state. As part of the drive, the driving licences of 4,488 motorists have been suspended, while 497 licences have been permanently cancelled. The action has been taken to curb the rising number of road accidents.
Transport Secretary’s Warning
Transport Secretary Raj Kumar said drivers with suspended licences will face permanent cancellation if they are caught violating traffic rules again during or after the suspension period. In such cases, motorists will have to apply afresh and clear a driving test to regain a licence. He underlined that the campaign is not a one-off exercise and will continue on a regular basis.
Violations Drawing the Maximum Action
The department said the highest number of actions were taken for overspeeding, rash driving, overloading, jumping red lights, riding without helmets or seat belts, wrong-side driving and repeated violations. Habitual offenders are under special watch and may face permanent cancellation of their licences.
District-wise Figures
According to official data, on the recommendations of the police and traffic police, 2,983 licences were suspended and 393 cancelled across various districts. In Patna and several other districts, district transport officers took suo motu action, suspending 1,065 licences and cancelling 104. Further action will continue on pending recommendations.
Appeal to Drivers
Raj Kumar appealed to all motorists to strictly follow traffic rules, stressing that compliance ensures not only their own safety but also that of others on the road.
Strengthening Technological Surveillance
To rein in accidents, vehicles violating rules are being identified through ANPR cameras, while joint teams of the police and transport department are carrying out intensive checks. The department said strict enforcement will further strengthen road safety and that violators will not be spared, with the aim of reducing accidents and ensuring safer travel across the state.
