Patna: A sensational case of cybercrime has emerged involving the mobile number of former Patna High Court Chief Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari, which has reportedly been hacked. Cybercriminals have used his number to solicit money from numerous individuals, including lawyers, by sending fraudulent messages requesting sums of Rs 55,000 from some and Rs 45,000 from others.
One Patna-based lawyer reported receiving a message from Justice Ansari’s number claiming that his UPI (Unified Payments Interface) was not functioning and that the money would be repaid as soon as it was operational. Several recipients were instructed to transfer funds within two to three hours. This suspicious request has also reached several senior officials, including a registrar at the Patna High Court. Initially, recipients were puzzled by the messages, but after discussing it among themselves, they realised it was a coordinated cyber scam.
Media reports suggest that many High Court advocates have received similar messages, leaving them alarmed. The scam was uncovered when messages were sent to several retired judges, officers, and known advocates in Patna, demanding money. Justice Ansari, who currently resides in Delhi, has reportedly been out of contact as several people attempted unsuccessfully to reach him on his mobile. The consensus is that his number has indeed been compromised.
