Tejas Shandilya and Arpita Singh Clinch Bihar State Under-13 Chess Titles

Patna: Tejas Shandilya (Boys’ Category) from Muzaffarpur and Arpita Singh (Girls’ Category) from Bhojpur have emerged as the winners of the Bihar State Under-13 Chess Titles, organised by the Katihar District Chess Association under the aegis of the All Bihar Chess Association. In the final round held today at Agrasen Bhawan in Govindpur, Katihar, Tejas secured a draw against Pratyush, while Arpita claimed victory by defeating Charvi Baid from Purnia.

In the closely contested boys’ category, five players ended up with six points each after the final round. The final standings were determined based on tie-break points. Tejas Shandilya from Muzaffarpur was declared the winner due to his superior Buchholz score, while Jayesh Mishra from Darbhanga secured the runner-up position. Avyay Sharma, who had been leading until yesterday, lost a crucial match to Pratyush. As a result, in the tie-break between these two players, both with six points and an equal Buchholz score of 32, Pratyush was placed third, and Avyay took fourth place. Another player with six points, Yatharth Nathani, secured fifth place.

In the girls’ category, the Bihar chess scene saw a significant shift this time. Traditionally dominated by players from Patna, this year no player from Patna qualified for the national competition in either the boys’ or girls’ categories. In the girls’ category, Arpita Singh from Bhojpur, an unrated player, emerged victorious with five and a half points, despite the presence of five rated players. In today’s final round, on the top board, Aadya Shri from Muzaffarpur defeated Palchin Jain from Kishanganj, while on board two, Arpita from Bhojpur triumphed over Charvi Baid from Purnia, earning five and a half points. Based on Buchholz points, Arpita was declared the winner, and Aadya was the runner-up. Abhishree and Shalini from Patna secured the third and fourth positions with 5 and 4.5 points, respectively.

During the prize distribution ceremony following the final round, the winners were honoured with trophies and certificates by the chief guest, Usha Agarwal, along with Dr. Nutan Kumari, the city’s renowned doctor, and Shipra Singh, the guest of honour and Joint Secretary of the All Bihar Chess Association. The event was also attended by Chief Referee Nand Kishore, Vice President of the Katihar District Chess Association Dr. Shambhu Nath, and Organising Secretary Pratyush Kumar.
