Patna: The city’s most popular picnic destination, Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, also known as Patna Zoo is all set to become even more vibrant, with several new and rare wildlife species expected to arrive soon.
Under an animal exchange programme, the Patna Zoo has finalised a major agreement with National Zoological Park and Rohtak Zoo. As part of this initiative, visitors may soon witness striking species such as a white tigress and the rare Sangai deer.
The highlight of the exchange with the Delhi Zoo will be the arrival of a white tigress. Additionally, six Sangai deer—considered the pride of Manipur, comprising two males and four females—will also be brought to Patna.
From Delhi, the zoo will further receive four blackbucks, four rosy pelicans, and four painted storks, significantly enhancing activity in the bird zone.
In return, Patna Zoo will send several of its animals to other facilities. These include four Indian wolves, one common male tiger, four gharials, two common rat snakes, and two barn owls to the Delhi Zoo. A pair of wolves will also be sent to the Rohtak Zoo.
Meanwhile, Patna will receive two green iguanas and two silver pheasants from Rohtak. Officials said this exchange programme, aligned with international standards, will not only increase biodiversity but also contribute to the conservation of endangered species.
According to zoo authorities, the primary aim of such programmes is to maintain genetic diversity among wildlife. Animals living within the same zoo often face the risk of inbreeding, which can weaken future generations.
The introduction of new animals from different regions helps improve species health and eliminates genetic deficiencies. This initiative is expected to not only increase animal populations but also offer visitors a fresh and engaging experience with each visit.
With the agreement now finalised, Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park is poised to witness a significant boost in its appeal in the coming months.
