Patna: A late-night encounter broke out between Patna Police and criminals in the Khagaul police station area of Danapur subdivision in the state capital on Thursday, leaving notorious criminal Manager Rai injured by a bullet.
Police had been searching for Manager Rai, a resident of the Didarganj area, for a long time. Acting on a tip-off that he was planning to carry out a major crime in the Khagaul area, the local police swung into action and cordoned off the locality. Senior officers were informed, following which a special operation was launched to apprehend the suspect.
Seeing himself surrounded, Manager Rai allegedly opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated in a controlled manner, during which Rai was shot and injured. Panic gripped the area during the exchange of fire, but the situation was brought under control swiftly.
Hearing the gunshots, residents in the vicinity rushed indoors. No civilian casualties were reported in the incident. Police also seized a motorcycle that was being used by the criminal. The injured accused was immediately admitted to AIIMS, Patna, for treatment.

Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma said that Manager Rai is facing over a dozen criminal cases, including murder, robbery, extortion and possession of illegal arms. He is also said to be a close associate of former RJD MLA Ritlal Yadav. Police had been on the lookout for him for a considerable period.
The SSP further said that Rai’s name had also surfaced in the 2022 murder case of Dr Md Anawar Alam in the Khagaul police station area. His arrest is being described as a major success for the police.
At present, police are interrogating the injured accused to gather information about his criminal network, associates and sources of weapons. The arrest is expected to help tighten the noose around criminal gangs active in Khagaul and adjoining areas. The police administration has issued a stern warning that any attempt to disrupt law and order will not be tolerated.
