Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited Darbhanga on Friday to assess the flood-affected regions. He inspected a food packaging centre set up for the flood victims at the indoor stadium at Polo Ground. During the visit, he issued several important instructions to the District Magistrate and relevant officials regarding relief distribution to the affected residents.
Following this, the Chief Minister conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas in Biraul sub-division and inspected a community kitchen in Punouch village, which was providing meals for the flood victims. He further offered key directives to officials during his visit. Kumar then proceeded to the flood-affected areas of the Kiratpur and Kusheshwarsthan blocks.
The Chief Minister announced that the government would provide financial assistance of ₹7,000 to each flood-affected household. He instructed that the aid should be transferred to the victims’ bank accounts before Vijaya Dashami. Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni reiterated the commitment, confirming that ₹7,000 would be credited to around 50,000 flood victims’ accounts by October 9, before Durga Puja.
The floods in North Bihar have been exacerbated by heavy rains in Nepal, causing rivers such as Kosi and Gandak to overflow. Several embankments have breached at more than a dozen locations. This year, for the first time in 56 years, record levels of water have been discharged from the Kosi Veerpur Barrage and Gandak Barrage, leading to widespread flooding across large areas of North Bihar.
