Patna: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a pacemaker was implanted in the heart of a 5-year-old girl without making an incision at Mahavir Heart Hospital, managed by the Mahavir Mandir Trust. The successful procedure was led by a team of pediatric cardiologists under Dr. Major Prabhat Kumar at the hospital located on the sixth floor of Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital.

Dr. Prabhat explained that typically, open-heart surgery is required to implant a pacemaker in such a young child. However, Varsha Kumari’s 5-year-old daughter from Buxar received a pacemaker through a vein, a procedure known as transvenous implantation. Dr. Kumar claimed that this is the first case in Bihar where a pacemaker has been implanted in such a small child using this method.

The medical team included Dr. Ashish Golwara, Dr. Aditya, technician Chandan, and other staff members who contributed to this complex procedure. Acharya Kishore Kunal, Secretary of Mahavir Mandir Trust, congratulated the team for their success.

When the girl was admitted to the hospital, she had a slow heartbeat and swelling on her face and mouth. An ECG test revealed a complete heart block and a hole in her heart. In an emergency situation, a pacemaker was implanted, and the hole in her heart was closed using a telescope method known as PDA device closure technique.

Dr. Major Prabhat Kumar reported that the girl is now healthy and will be discharged from the hospital on Sunday evening.
