Dense fog in Bihar
From Neeraj Kumar
Patna: December’s cold has suddenly turned harsh across Bihar, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions in several districts. The warning, effective from December 19 to 22, suggests that daily life may remain disrupted over the next few days, particularly in north and west Bihar.
The IMD has cautioned that around 20 districts may witness dense to very dense fog. Areas including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Gaya and Bhagalpur are likely to experience extremely low visibility during morning and night hours. In some pockets, visibility could drop to as low as 50 metres.
In the state capital Patna, maximum temperatures are being recorded well below normal. Despite a slight rise in minimum temperatures, a persistent chill has been felt throughout the day. A thick blanket of fog has also made sunshine a rare sight.
Meteorological officials attribute the dense fog to westerly winds, high surface-level moisture and low wind speeds. According to the IMD, these conditions are expected to persist for the next few days, affecting morning traffic and routine activities.
District administrations have been directed to remain alert, with arrangements for bonfires being made where necessary. Officials have indicated that this year’s cold spell could be more severe than last year’s.
Cold conditions are expected to prevail across Bihar for the next seven days. While fog is likely during mornings and evenings, light sunshine may appear during the day. There is no major change in temperatures forecast, but the cold is expected to intensify gradually. People have been advised to take necessary precautions.
