Patna: On Friday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inspected the ongoing construction of the multi-level hub and underground subway near Patna Junction, instructing authorities to expedite the work. To address the electricity needs of the facility, he also recommended the installation of solar panels on the roof of the multi-level parking structure.
During the inspection of the subway, the Chief Minister highlighted that the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion near Patna Junction, a particularly crowded area where crossing the road poses difficulties and risks. He emphasised the importance of completing the construction efficiently to provide passengers with a convenient passage and relief from traffic jams.
The Chief Minister visited the top floor of the under-construction three-storey multi-level hub. The Secretary of the Bihar Urban Development and Housing Department, Abhay Kumar Singh, provided him with a detailed update on the construction progress using the site plan. He informed the Chief Minister that the multi-level parking facility will accommodate 32 buses and 225 cars and will be directly linked to the parking areas near Buddha Smriti Park and Patna Railway Junction via the subway. This connection is expected to ease access for commuters heading to Patna Junction, reducing congestion in the surrounding area and providing convenient access to the Hanuman Temple.
The project’s objective is to enhance the traffic management system around Patna Junction Railway Station. The multi-level hub, being constructed near Patna GPO Golambar, is set to become a key transit centre, linking various modes of transport, including city buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and private cars. The subway will connect Patna Railway Station with Mahavir Temple and Buddha Park, ensuring seamless movement for commuters.
The subway extends 440 metres from the multi-level parking to Patna Junction, featuring four travelators measuring 18, 30, 45, and 55 metres, totalling 148 metres. It will also include two escalators and two underground lifts, positioned near the Mahavir Mandir exit and the multi-level parking area. The underground section will be equipped with health ventilation and air conditioning systems.
There will be three entry and exit points for the subway: one near the multi-level parking area, another at Buddha Smriti Park, and the third adjacent to the Hanuman Temple near Patna Junction. This construction is designed to facilitate train passengers, allowing them to bypass traffic congestion. Pedestrians will have the convenience of accessing the multi-level parking through the subway, enabling smoother travel across the area.
