Patna: The elderly population of Bihar will no longer face hurdles in accessing medical treatment. The state government has introduced the Ayushman Vay Vandan Yojana, a scheme ensuring free treatment for residents aged 70 years and above.
On Wednesday, Health Minister Mangal Pandey and Urban Development Minister Nitin Nabin formally inaugurated the scheme during a programme held at the Maurya Lok Complex in Patna. On this occasion, Ayushman Vandan cards were distributed to eligible individuals.
The Bihar government aims to issue 50 lakh Ayushman Vandan cards by 12 December. In Patna, the Municipal Corporation has been tasked with conducting a door-to-door campaign across all 75 wards to ensure eligible elderly residents receive their cards. Health Minister Mangal Pandey emphasised that the cards will be issued free of cost, ensuring no financial burden on beneficiaries.
“The people of Bihar have long awaited this scheme. Now, those who are 70 years or older can receive free treatment. It is essential that everyone eligible applies for the card, as the benefits of the scheme can only be availed with it,” said Mangal Pandey. He added that Bihar is currently ranked third in terms of Ayushman card issuance and expressed optimism about reaching the second position by December. “So far, the scheme has saved ₹1,800 crore for the people of Bihar,” he remarked.
The state has set a target of making Ayushman cards for 1.8 crore families. Of these, cards for 1.51 crore families have already been issued, covering 3.6 crore individuals out of the total target of 8.2 crore.
Urban Development Minister Nitin Nabin lauded the initiative, stating, “The Prime Minister has fulfilled his promise made before the elections by launching this ambitious scheme. The Urban Development Department will conduct campaigns throughout Bihar to ensure cards are made for all those in need.”
To apply for the Ayushman card, individuals must provide key documents, including an Aadhaar card, residence certificate, ration card, and a mobile number. These documents are essential for completing the application process.
This initiative marks a significant step in providing financial and medical relief to the elderly population of Bihar.
