Bihar: Fake RPF Jawan Arrested for Robbing and Throwing Passengers Off Moving Train

Patna: The railway police in Bihar have arrested Rohit Tiwari, a 25-year-old resident of Bariswan in Bhojpur district, for robbing two passengers from the disabled coach of the Malda Town-New Delhi Express Special train and throwing them off the moving train. Four mobile phones, a purse inscribed with “Bihar Police,” and ₹15,000 were recovered from the accused. Railway SP Amritendu Shekhar Thakur provided details during a press conference.

The Railway SP revealed that Rohit posed as a fake Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan, checking passengers’ tickets before robbing them and throwing them off trains. He was apprehended while sleeping on a bench at Gandhi Maidan.

The incident occurred on September 19, when Chandan and Abhishek, uncle and nephew, were travelling to Delhi with general tickets. Rohit boarded the train near Bihiya station and accused them of travelling in a special train with a general ticket, threatening them with a fine. He then moved them to the disabled coach, where two other passengers had already been robbed and beaten. Rohit proceeded to rob the duo, transferring UPI money from their mobiles before throwing them off the moving train near Nadaun Halt, causing injuries.

Rohit, who had worked as a security guard in Gujarat, aspired to become a policeman. When he failed to join the force, he began posing as an RPF jawan.  He wore khaki-coloured trousers, police-style shoes, and carried a purse with “Bihar Police” written on it. To complete the act, he set the RPF logo as his phone wallpaper and tucked his mobile near his waist to simulate carrying a pistol.

Rohit attempted to evade the police by following techniques he had seen in web series. He transferred UPI funds from stolen mobiles and made quick purchases to avoid detection. However, this mobile and UPI number proved crucial to the police investigation. The mobile was traced, revealing the stolen money transfer, leading to his arrest.

The Railway SP explained that after the robbery, Rohit had planned further heists and kept changing locations, moving between Jharkhand, Banaras, and Chhapra station. Using CCTV footage and technical investigations, the police tracked him to Patna Junction, where he was finally arrested at Gandhi Maidan.

A team led by Danapur Railway DSP, using technical investigation, managed to apprehend the accused. Rohit had previously been jailed for bike theft from Shahpur police station in Bhojpur district.

The team involved in solving the case included Danapur Railway DSP Prashant Kumar, Buxar Railway Police Inspector Ranjit Kumar, Buxar Railway Station Head Vijendra Kumar, Buxar RPF Inspector Deepak Kumar, Danapur RPF Inspector Pokhraj Meena, and Pataliputra Railway Station Head Pankaj Kumar, along with 12 other railway policemen. The Railway SP announced that the team would be honoured for their excellent work in solving the case.
