Patna: The Surgical Gastroenterology team at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully removing an extremely rare and complex tumour weighing nearly eight kilograms from the abdomen of a 60-year-old patient. The high-risk surgery lasted around three hours and was completed safely. Doctors confirmed that the patient is now out of danger.
Patient Referred from Begusarai
IGIMS Medical Superintendent and Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr Manish Mandal, said the patient, a resident of Begusarai, was admitted with complaints of abdominal swelling, indigestion and vomiting. A CT scan conducted during preliminary investigations revealed a large tumour inside the abdomen. Following this, doctors in Begusarai referred the patient to IGIMS for advanced treatment.
Surgery Posed Serious Challenges
According to Dr Mandal, the tumour was tightly attached to major abdominal arteries and veins, significantly increasing the risk during surgery. Given the complexity, a detailed strategy was finalised after coordination meetings with the cardiology, pulmonary medicine and anaesthesia departments.
Tumour Had an Unusual Appearance
Dr Mandal said that once removed, the tumour appeared unusual in shape, resembling a structure with a head, neck and torso. It was dangerously entangled with the small intestine, large intestine and major blood vessels of the abdomen. Despite these challenges, the expert surgical team managed to remove the tumour completely after nearly three hours of intense effort.
Extremely Rare Worldwide
Doctors described the tumour as belonging to an exceptionally rare category, with very few such cases reported globally. Preliminary assessments suggest it may be a liposarcoma, a cancer arising from fatty tissue. However, final confirmation will be made only after the histopathology report is received. Further treatment will be planned based on those findings. Experts said that diagnosing and treating such tumours always remains a significant challenge in medical science, making this successful surgery a major achievement for the institute.
Team Effort Praised
The complex operation was performed under the leadership of Dr Manish Mandal, with Dr Saket Kumar, Dr Abhimanyu, Dr Danish, Dr Sunit and anaesthetist Dr Nitin as part of the core team. IGIMS Director Dr Binde Kumar and Dean Dr Om Kumar congratulated the Surgical Gastroenterology and Anaesthesia departments, calling the surgery a life-saving intervention for the patient and a source of motivation for doctors to handle rare and challenging cases in the future.
